Courtesy of the BFI, this footage is quite remarkable. My grandparents, one of whom is still breathing, had almost been born at this time - as children in the 1910s, the city was still fairly similar - a thought that I find difficult to fathom, such is the distant era nature of this clip.

As a Conan-Doyle-reading kid I had trouble imagining many of the scenes involved - these films help, and certainly reveal the extraordinary progress we've made through technology and wealth-creation in the last hundred years, in spite of the effects of two world wars.
